Taste of Africa

Please join us on Saturday October 14th at the Teamsters Temple, 4701 Butler St, Pittsburgh, PA 15201 (6-7pm VIP reception, 7-10pm general admission). The evening will include some familiar components of years’ past and feature some new and exciting activities to better connect you with our mission and life-changing work in Cameroon.

Here are some of the things we expect at this years Taste of Africa event:

  • VIP reception from 6-7pm includes special drinks and African street food
  • Authentic Cameroonian cuisine by the women of the Cameroon Community of Pittsburgh (see menu below!)
  • Drinks and refreshments from local breweries
  • Performances, including traditional Cameroonian dances
  • Live painting by local artist
  • Silent and live auction
  • African music and performances

Ndolé and Plantains: The national dish of Cameroon, Ndolé is a dish consisting of stewed nuts, ndoleh (bitter leaves indigenous to West Africa), and fish or beef, served with plantains

Suya: a spicy shish kebab popular in West Africa

Fufu Njama Njama: A Cameroonian staple, Fufu is a dough made from boiled and ground masa/maize, plantain and/or cassava, and is eaten with Njama Njama, a kind of vegetable sometimes called the garden huckleberry.

Cameroonian Jerk chicken

Jollof Rice: rice with tomatoes, onions, salt, and spices

Spicy meatballs: African Meatballs slowly simmered in a spicy tomato sauce

Koki corn: African corn tamales.  Fresh corn is coarsely ground and mixed with spinach, palm oil then wrapped in banana leaves and steamed

Cornchaff: a corn and bean porridge enjoyed throughout West Africa

Pepper soup: a West African soup that is prepared using various meats, chili peppers and nutmeg as primary ingredients

Puff puff: a traditional African snack similar to a doughnut
